Happy Thursday to you!

I have so many random things to tell you, so I decided to put them in a “things” blog post. I used to write these kind of posts back in the day, and they’re honestly fun for me to write. They’re kind of like a “brain dump,” so there’s a little bit of everything included! 🙂 Ok, here we go!

1 . The 30-Day Build a Booty Challenge started yesterday. Woohoo! You can still join if you’d like. There are 5 workouts each week, and they start on Wednesdays, so you have plenty of time to complete them. I’m sharing some video demos on Instagram, so feel free to pop over there to check them out. Additionally, I’ll be hosting weekly giveaways on Thursdays on the blog, so be sure to check back for a chance to win all sorts of goodies!

2. The deadline to sign up for the May group of Master Your Macros is today. If you’re interested, please sign up ASAP, so we can get you up and running for Monday!

3. We donated some of Quinn’s baby toys the other day, and I’m surprised how much it affected me. I didn’t cry, but, man, it made my heart sad. The toys reminded me of such a sweet time in his life. Those baby years really do fly by!

4. I ordered addition flash cards from Amazon for Quinn, but inside the box was multiplication cards. Whomp whomp. Thankfully, Mr. Haupert put his teaching hat on, and we skipped right past adding to multiplying (with the help of some pennies)!

5. I made this delicious one-pot chicken pasta recipe in the instant pot the other day, and it turned out so well. I can’t wait to share the recipe with you! It was SO EASY!

6. BUSTING MYTHS ABOUT BECOMING A BEAUTYCOUNTER CONSULTANT – This was such a great blog post!

“Is Beautycounter a pyramid scheme?”

“If the products are so great, why aren’t they just sold in traditional retail stores?”

“I’ve heard something like 1% of consultants in businesses like this earn money.”

Or, accusations of “MLMs are predatory to women, so Beautycounter is bad news.”

If you’ve ever had any of the questions or concerns above, please read this post. Additionally, it’s a new month, and I’m recruiting new consultants for my team. If you’re interested in chatting, please let me know! 🙂

7. I’m loving peanut butter and jelly toast (and rice cakes) with banana slices lately. I’ve eaten this combo for breakfast every day this week. I’m usually such a PB+banana gal, but the jelly adds a little something extra!

8. I’m ALL about the clean-crafted wine lately. I ordered another case of wine from Scout & Cellar, and I’m so impressed with what I’ve tried. Usually, organic wines are kind of blah, but these are seriously delicious!! If you’re interested in staying in the loop about these wines and deals at Scout & Cellar, please sign up here. And, of course, feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

9. If you’re local, the Derby Street Shops are hosting a Kentucky Derby Party on Saturday night to kick off their newest addition: The Derby Street Green in partnership with South Shore Health. It’s a family-friendly event that includes champagne mint juleps, local beer and wine for sale, live ponies, a hat contest, and Kentucky Derby crafts and games for kids.
Tickets are $5 per adult and kids are FREE. All proceeds benefit Hingham Public Schools. We’re planning to go, so if you do too, please say hi! 🙂

10. I have a full blog post coming about why the scale fluctuates (I’m soooo NOT a fan of the scale), but I just wanted to share the image for the post since it came out so well!

11. I ordered two bras from Zappos, and they BOTH fit! Holy cow, I’m still in shock. I have THE WORST time finding bras (I even tried ThirdLove), so I was pleasantly surprised! FYI: The bras are Natori Gloss Full Fit Contour Underwire Bra + Natori Bliss Perfection Contour Underwire Bra. Definitely check out Zappos (free shipping) if you’re in the market!

12. I’m so glad that it’s May. We have so many celebrations on the horizon!

13. Our vacation to Punta Cana is 68 days away!!

The Bravery Band represents the fearless and unstoppable person you can be. It’s just one word and five digits, but involves countless stories. Whether you’re a hero in the military or a hero within yourself conquering life’s everyday battles, there is someone brave in all of us. The Bravery Brand represents the American Dream that anything in life is possible. Wearing the band is a constant reminder of your bravery.

Lindsay kindly gifted me a rose gold Countless Band, which I’ve worn non-stop since receiving it. It’s a great reminder to be brave in my everyday life, especially with regard to Carrots ‘N’ Cake and putting myself out there. I’ve struggled with confidence in the past, so it’s a nice reminder to put those anxieties aside. I love that the message on the band is subtle, using the digits 27283 to represent the spelling of the word BRAVE on your phone pad.

The Bravery Bands come in a number of styles for both women and men. They’re available in three Macy’s locations for a limited time (Northstar in San Antonio, TX, Lenox Square in Atlanta, GA, and Northshore Mall in Peabody, MA) as well as online, along with the bravery bag (it’s super cute!) at braverybrand.com, and also at Lindsay’s style lounge, The Cue, in Dorchester, MA. I love everything that the bands stand for as well as Lindsay’s story and connection to the brand. Read on for my interview with her!

What’s the story/inspiration behind Bravery Brand?

The Bravery brand was started back in 2014 when my Grandmother passed away. She was the Barber Walters of Boston, a socialite and media guru promoting and supporting designers, athletes, and politicians in the area. When she passed I had got a call from David Josef, Yolanda Celucci and a few others saying “Your Grandma helped us, so now its our time to help you.” That’s when I got asked to design the official bag for Boston Medical’s Catwalk for Cancer. I asked myself “What was I going to design that represented both men and women overcoming something that made them so brave? That’s when the American Flag came to me. Something both men and women could both carry as well as the greatest symbol of Bravery.

In 2014, I launched our FIRST “Bravery Bag” for Boston Medical’s Catwalk For Cancer. It was then out of nowhere people kept sending me their stories of where they were wearing their bags, what they were carrying it for and how they were seeing other people with them.

Then, in 2015 I reached out to military non-profits and teamed up with the USO New England and started to give back to our active duty military. The Bravery Bag was born to represent the brave and strong person within all of us whether you were wearing it for yourself or someone you knew!

What’s your background?

I graduated from Lasell College in 2013 with a degree in Fashion Merchandising. While studying at Lasell, I also attended London College of Fashion.

I’ve also been sewing since I was six years old and selling handbags since I was fourteen, which gave me a better understanding of manufacturing and what it took to produce a product. At the age of 20, I was producing and manufacturing my first line of handbags right here in Massachusetts.

Being an entrepreneur, I need to immerse myself in every aspect of the business. I currently go from manufacturing products, listening to peoples stories, to being a buyer and stylist for The Cue, to running the back end of both businesses day in and day out.

Is there a particular bravery story from customers that has stuck with you as especially memorable?

I’ll never forget a few stories that always hit near to the heart but one that I always remember was a girl from college whose card read: “I am brave to have chosen the school I wanted to go to and no where my parents wanted me to go. I now am a freshman at the school of my choice, on the deans list and my parents aren’t talking to me. I am brave for being strong for myself.” – I’ll never forget speaking at that school and reading that story and how much I could feel that girl feeling alone but achieving her own happiness all at once.

Where do you see the brand going in the future?

In my eyes, The Bravery Brand is creating a brand that brings people together as one, and my hope is that our band will be on every wrist in the US.

In the future, I’d like The Bravery Brand platform to be connected to multiple non-profits and companies to help bring awareness and “band together” to create powerful connections. Every wrist and every story!

What’s your favorite band style?

I love them all because they all represent a little piece of me. But if I had to choose, my favorite band would be the rose gold flags. I love how it shows our patriotic side on the outside with a constant reminder of the word written inside “I Am Brave” for that little reminder within all of us!

What’s the inspiration behind the Countless Band?

When I first started the Bravery bag, I knew how powerful it was and what it meant to people. What I realized in that process was that it wasn’t everyday people wanted to say that THEY were brave or that they were wearing it for themselves. Fast forward a few years later when I was creating the Bravery Bands, I knew I wanted one that represented our mission without saying it. I remember thinking up all sorts or logos or symbols that could represent BRAVE, but nothing seemed to resonate with me. It wasn’t till I was driving on the highway one day and a big military truck was in front of me with those giant bumper numbers. It was right than when I was like how do I spell the word brave in numbers? I immediately got out my phone and realized it was 27283 and immediately every bone in my body was like THAT’S IT!!! One word, five digits, countless stories. 27283 is the digits of BRAVE for those who are wearing it for themselves or wearing their band because of someone else it’s a code.

Mal had a random craving for a charcuteri board, and Quinn suggested a party, specifically a “party night.” We decided to combine their ideas for a “Euro Party Night” since stopping by our local Euro Mart was key to the evening.

If you’re local, you definitely need to check out this place. The imported cured meats are absolutely incredible. I actually didn’t know I liked salami until yesterday! It was so flavorful and not fake-tasting like a lot of grocery story salamis often are. The guy behind the counter actually said if he wants to impress someone, he’ll offer them a sample of the salami, and I definitely know why now. We were immediately sold! 🙂

The Euro Mart also sells Kinder Eggs, which are SO FUN, it’s hard to wait until you get home to open them!

Back at home, Quinn was in full on party mode. He was totally into it and took charge with the decorations and what needed to be done. Mal and I loved watching his “take charge” attitude and asked him if he wanted to moonlight as a party planner someday. His reply: an enthusiastic “YES!” FYI: Quinn’s dream (full-time) job is becoming an EMT with some party planning on the side.

Decoration highlights: A paper fan napkin holder for the Batman napkins, place settings that included a stripped straw + toothpick, and sparkly Thanksgiving centerpieces. I helped Quinn with the food, but he set the table and did such a great job!

The bug beach chair at the head of the table was also Quinn’s idea! 🙂

Cheers to our first Euro Party Night!!

Our party attire included scratch-and-sniff pizza stickers because who doesn’t love to smell like pizza!?

And, of course, Murphy was invited to our party. We gave him a bite of brie cheese, and he must have licked his lips 50 times. I mean, it was a delicious brie!

P.S. Totally unrelated, but I saw this New York Times Custom Birthday Book in an Uncommon Goods catalog and just had to share in case you’re in the market for a Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gift. (I’m pretty sure this is what Grandma and Papi are getting!) It’s a book of front pages from the New York Times from each year since the recipient’s birthday. Isn’t that a fun and unique gift idea? FYI: If you want to gift one for Mother’s Day, the deadline to order is tomorrow (4/30)!

Not only am I excited about the upcoming weekend (we’re seeing our hometown crew), but I’m excited about today’s post because #snacks. I love to travel and do it often, which means I have had plenty of practice packing healthier travel-friendly food for when we’re on the go.

After lots of experimenting over the years, I’ve found that I feel best when I pack low-sugar (and high protein) options, especially when I have a long day of flying. Aside from making sure to stay extra hydrated with all the water (and decaf iced coffee), I usually bring a container of leftovers (like roasted sweet potatoes) and a variety of snacks. Without further adieu, today’s Friday 5 features five of my favorite low-sugar travel-friendly snacks!

1. Health Warrior Chia Bars

Health Warrior Chia Seed Bars are the perfect, packable snack. Plus, you don’t have to worry about them getting smooshed or melted in your carry-on. With all of the superfood benefits of chia seeds, only 100 calories, and 3g of sugar, they’re great to curb your hunger at the tail end of long flight. The new Strawberry Shortcake flavor is amazing! Even when opening the package, you can smell delicious strawberry. The strawberry shortcake flavor is perfection, and this particular bar is an awesome treat when you’re craving something sweet, but don’t want to overdo it with sugar. It’s definitely a must-try! You can save 20% off your order with code CARROTSNCAKE20!

2. Fuel for Fire Plant-Based Protein Smoothies

A packable smoothie with 10g of protein? Sign me up! Getting in your fruits and veggies is always a bit more difficult on travel days. These packable smoothies are made with 10 simple ingredients (or less!) and no added sugars. You don’t even need to refrigerate them (though of course they taste better chilled). They also make for a mess-free snack to bring for the kids. Quinn actually asks for one pretty much every time we go to CrossFit! 🙂

3. Archer Farms Jerky

I usually pack some sort of jerky for an easy source of protein. I like that Archer Farms jerky is make without preservatives, nitrites, and MSG. And while it has some added sugar, it doesn’t add up to much when I’m snacking on a few pieces with say a handful of nuts. And this chile flavor… holy yum!

4. RX Nut Butter Packets

If you love nut butter like I do, you’ll love these! Just like RX Bars, these have super short ingredient lists (just how I like them!) and use egg whites for protein. My favorite flavor is the vanilla almond butter. I will literally eat it straight from the pouch, but it’s also great with a banana or cup of instant oatmeal.

5. Vital Proteins Bone Broth Packets

So typically I wouldn’t think to bring bone broth on a trip, but these individual packets of chicken bone broth make it really convenient. Not only is bone broth rich in protein, but it’s also really soothing on your stomach (and great for GI health). I like having a couple of savory options on hand, and these were made to stuff in your suitcase.

My diet is mostly on track via macros and overall balanced eating, but I know I need to step it up a notch with my workouts if I want to look and feel great come beach season.

My booty has always been a “problem area” for me, so a couple of years ago, I decided to focus on building and firming up my glutes with a 30-Day Booty Building Challenge. I was committed to making a change, but I didn’t want the extra workouts to take over my life. Basically, I wanted a glute program that was short and sweet, but very effective. You guys know I’m ALL about efficiency when it comes to my workouts, so this challenge was no different!

And you know what? In a short amount of time, I saw results! So much, in fact, I decided to commit to another 30-day challenge for the month of May. This time, however, instead of doing one round of each workout, I am going to knock out two. It ends up being just 10 minutes a day. If you add weight to these exercises, you’ll feel the burn for sure!

Interested in participating? I would love for you to join me! Accountability is most definitely needed as summertime approaches, and I know I’m not the only one! Leave a comment below, and let me know if you’re in! We’ll have weekly check-ins and giveaways here on the blog, so keep a look out each week! 🙂

Prior to discovering brands like Beautycounter and Primally Pure, I didn’t pay much attention to the skin care and beauty products I was using. I figured if it’s being sold in stores, it’s definitely safe, right? Turns out, I was wrong. Read on for my tips for transitioning to natural deodorant.

Over the past year or so, I’ve worked hard to become more conscious of what I put on my body after realizing that a healthy, sustainable lifestyle isn’t only about diet and exercise. The products we purchase and use are equally as important. We focus so much on what we’re putting in our bodies, but what about what we’re putting on them? After all, our skin is our largest organ (with the potential to absorb up to 60-70% of what we expose it to), so shouldn’t we prioritize our skincare as much as we do the foods we eat?

One change I made was the daily deodorant that I use. While our pits are definitely not the most glamorous thing to talk to about, using deodorant is often a regular part of our routines, especially for those of us who get super sweaty like I do. Unfortunately, most conventional drugstore deodorants are full of artificial (and even potentially dangerous) ingredients that have no place being on our skin. Our underarms are actually one of the most absorbent parts of our bodies. Think aluminum (!!) synthetic fragrances and parabens – yikes! In my opinion, if there’s only one switch you make when it comes to skincare and beauty, it should definitely be to natural deodorant!

I’ve tried a lot of different brands (some were drugstore versions of natural), but none of them really did the job. I would still end up pretty gross and sweaty, even after giving myself time to adjust to a natural product. Some of the deodorants that I tried even left white stains all over my clothing (that I have yet to get out). Ughhhh, MAJOR pet peeve!

Primally Pure Charcoal Deodorant is hands-down the best natural deodorant I’ve found. Not only does it, you know, actually work, but I love the story behind it. The brand was born out of the founder’s own desire to switch to a natural deodorant. When her experimentation attempts with the ones available on the market failed, she just created her own. I love this! Talk about taking things into your own hands! Formulated with safe and gentle yet effective ingredients, such as baking soda, fair-trade coconut oil, and activated coconut charcoal, this deodorant keeps me sweat-free and smelling fresh. And, of course, I love not having to worry about any harsh chemicals that could disrupt my body’s natural balance. It’s truly the best!

While I’m a proponent of natural deodorant and definitely don’t foresee myself returning to conventional drugstore brands, there are a few caveats that come with making the transition. Oh, yes, I’m talking about “detoxing.” Our bodies have grown accustomed to the artificial results produced by using artificial ingredients. Removing those potential toxins from our systems might lead to some inadvertent side effects. The good news? With a little time and patience, these side effects will reside. Below are a few tips for what to expect and how you can make the transition a little more seamless.

Tips for Transitioning to Natural Deodorant

Sweat

Yes, you’re going to sweat. And, yes, it’s completely healthy and normal! Culturally (especially for women), we’re encouraged to cover up some of the completely normal biological processes our bodies go through and sweating is one of them. Contrary to what we’ve been told, we’re 100% supposed to sweat! When transitioning to natural deodorant, you might find that you initially perspire a bit more than you are used to. This is because the chemicals in conventional products can disrupt our bodies’ natural detoxification process, and our bodies need time to rebalance themselves. BUT this won’t last forever, and once the the balance is restored, you might actually find yourself less sweaty than before!

Smell

Yep… we’re going there. Just like the chemicals in conventional products mask our sweat, they also mask our smell. No one is saying we need to get down with being super stinky, but if we’ve gotten used to the scent of artificial, synthetic fragrances, then we might feel a bit stinky while transitioning. Thankfully, this resolves with time, and if it doesn’t, you might want to look into any other dietary and lifestyle factors that could be causing the problem. For example, this might be how a dairy sensitivity reveals itself when it was previously being masked by conventional products. Crazy, right?

No matter what, you should always avoid deodorants that have “fragrance” on the label – this is usually a code word for lots of chemicals. I personally love the minty fresh smell of Primally Pure Charcoal Deodorant, which is scented naturally with essential oils. They also carry Blue Tansy, Geranium, Lavender, Lemongrass, and Tea Tree naturally scented products as well!

Irritation

While I’ve never experienced irritation from a natural deodorant, but I know it can happen. (Primally Pure’s contains essential fatty acids and nourishing, anti-inflammatory vitamins that prevent it.) Many natural deodorants contain baking soda, which can cause underarms to become red, itchy, and bumpy. It’s kind of similar to razor burn. If it happens, it’s usually at the beginning of use and calms down once your skin has adjusted.

There are a few reasons irritation could be exacerbated. If you’re using too much product (trust me, two swipes are all you need), are swiping roughly (yes, this is a thing), or are applying it immediately after shaving when skin is more sensitive. Try dabbing the product instead of wiping it or waiting a bit after shaving to apply. You could also apply the deodorant every other day or every two days and work your way up. Another handy tip is to dab a cotton ball soaked in apple cider vinegar on your underarms. This helps to naturally balance the PH of the skin. If all else fails, Primally Pure’s refreshing Everything Spray doesn’t contain baking soda. It can be used as an alternative to deodorant when you need a quick pick-me-up!

Underarm Darkening

Again, this isn’t something that I personally experienced, but it definitely happens (it tends to be more common in those of us with darker skin tones). While it’s certainly annoying, it’s in no way harmful – just your body adjusting to baking soda. As a remedy, try rubbing a lemon wedge dipped in sugar onto the darkened area. Lemon and sugar is a natural skin brightener and exfoliant!

Staining

Primally Pure Charcoal Deodorant is one of the few natural deodorants’s that I’ve tried that I have not experienced staining with. If a natural deodorant is causing staining, it’s likely due to the essential oils. You can try lessening the amount of product that you use to see if it helps. You can also wait a bit between applying and putting your clothes on to allow the oils to set. There are some fabrics where staining is more obvious, but I’ve found this to be the case whether you’re using natural or conventional products. I mean, we’ve all run out of the house at some point and then saw white marks on our shirt, right? Most of the time, these stains come with a regular wash cycle.

If you’re considering making the switch from conventional drugstore to natural deodorant, I’d say do it! And if you haven’t because you’re unsure of the detox phase, I totally get it. No one wants to walk around like a sweaty, stinky hot mess. In reality, it’s not that bad and lasts only a week or two at the most. The best piece of advice I can give you is to skip conventional brands that have come out with more natural products and go straight for a line that specializes in natural skin care, like Primally Pure. You can actually save 15% with code carrotsncake15 on your order. The code works for all products on Primally Pure. If you sign up for a subscription, you get free shipping! I definitely think it’s worth it for happy, healthy underarms! 🙂

Quinn had the opportunity to participate in 4 (!!) different egg hunts and, my gosh, he had a blast. Mal and I also liked to see his “competitive” side come out. Haha!

On Saturday, we attended a huge egg hunt that our town hosted at a local park. There must have been about 200 kids and, rumor has it, 5,000 plastic eggs with tiny toys inside. Quinn was definitely overwhelmed at first, but we explained how the egg hunt would work and he was all good. Then, he was excited and ALL BUSINESS!

When the horn sounded to officially kick off the Easter egg hunt, Quinn ran out and gathered a ton of eggs. He was so fast!! He was also really proud of himself. It was really cute! 🙂

After the egg hunt, we went out with some friends and their kids to Cask ‘N’ Flagon for an early dinner. I must have drank 3-4 glasses of wine between the restaurant and their house. Mal was on vacation last week, so I was basically on a booze and sugar bender between New York City and Easter. Holy cow, I embraced vacation to its fullest. More on this in a second.

On Easter morning, we did an egg hunt at our house. It started at Quinn’s bedroom and went outside into the backyard.

He had a great time and couldn’t believe how many jelly beans he got! 🙂

We had a low-key morning at home – complete with almond croissants and plenty of candy – and then drove out to my Grammie’s house to celebrate with my family. Quinn also got to do another Easter egg hunt with his cousins!

The cousins were also involved in some pool shenanigans, which was quite amusing since that’s exactly the type of stuff that I did with my cousins at Grammie’s house! 🙂

The dessert situation at my Grammie’s house was out of control delicious. I pretty much tried every kind of cake, cookie, and ice cream flavor. I usually just pick one or two options at events like this, but a week of vacation eating (and drinking) definitely rolled into Easter Day.

I actually had a few clients message me saying that they felt “off track” with their eating habits this past week, so I gave a little pep talk in our Nutrition & Accountability Group for moving forward – and then reminded myself of it last night when I was feeling kind of blah about my food choices. My advice:

* The past is in the past. Do not dwell on it. Move on.

* Make your NEXT meal healthy. Don’t wait until Monday!

* Don’t let a “bad” day or days (or whole week) derail you. One day, a few days, or a week won’t affect your overall progress. It’s really your habits and lifestyle over months and years that matter!

* Your goals don’t change, so don’t let any sort of negative momentum influence your choices. If you tripped going down a flight of stairs, you wouldn’t throw yourself down the rest of them, right?

* Make it a point to grocery shop and do some meal prep. Even a little is better than none!

Yesterday afternoon, Papi and his girlfriend stopped by our house and set up another Easter egg hunt for Quinn. Papi is “best friends” with the Easter Bunny, so Quinn got all sorts of goodies. It was quite the finish to a wonderful Easter weekend! 🙂

So, we’ve had quite the fun April vacation week. We got back from New York City on Monday morning, which, of course, was a great way to kick off the week. On Wednesday, I filmed a donut review with Jack from The Donut Digest at my beloved Coffee Shack.

The location closer to our home went out of business, but the original Coffee Shack is alive and well (in Marshfield). It’s about 30 minutes away, so I don’t often visit. But when I do, it’s a special occasion! 🙂

Jack gave the honey dip a B- grade, but the coconut donut is a solid A for me! 🙂

And the iced coffee is THE BEST around. Check out all of the fun flavors, which are brewed from flavored beans, not sugary syrup. Coffee Shack even has flavored decaf iced coffee! 🙂

Yesterday, Mal and I went to the driving range and then enjoyed a little happy hour action before picking up Quinn from school. My new fitness endeavor is learning how to play golf this summer, so it was a great start to this new project. I actually hit some decent balls!

All in all, it was a fun vacation week. And now that it’s Friday, it’s time for another edition of The Friday 5 where I recap my 5 favorites from the week. Enjoy!

1. Jeni’s Ice Cream– Omgggggg. Our NYC friends bought this ice cream for us to try one night (well, ok, both nights we visited because we loved it so much), and it’s absolutely incredible. The Gooey Butter Cake was out of this world! OMG. And if you go onto the website you’ll see that the Jeni’s flavors are truly something else. We found Jeni’s pints at Murray’s Cheese, but it looks like they’re in some Whole Foods locations and available online. I’m definitely planning a trip to our local Whole Foods this weekend! 🙂

2. Beautycounter Brilliant Brow Gel – Gals, full brows are in, which is why I love the new brow gel from Beautycounter. I don’t have very full brows, so I love that this fills them in while still looking natural. It’s like a mini mascara wand that colors the brow hairs, not the skin. I went with soft black, but it comes in 5 shades including clear. Photo: before on the left/after on the right. It’s subtle and natural-looking, but makes a difference!

3. Almond Joy Chia Pudding – I dug out this oldie but goodie recipe (if you haven’t tried chia pudding, you’ve gotta try this recipe with almonds, coconut, and chocolate!). This recipe is perfect to make a double batch of at the start of the week (add collagen for added protein) to have on hand for the easiest grab-n-go breakfast, snack, or dessert! Plus, it’s packed with protein and healthy fats!

4. Butcher Box Breakfast Bundle – It’s no surprise that we love Butcher Box in our house, so I was really excited to hear that when you sign up this month you get a free Breakfast Bundle that includes 2lbs of pork breakfast sausage and 2 packs of bacon (yes, you get all of that for FREE!). The uncured bacon (free of sugar, nitrates, and hormones is made from pasture raised heritage breed pigs) pairs perfectly with our favorite paleo pancakes. And the sausage can be used in a bunch of meal prep recipes. We’re eating less meat nowadays, but when we do, we make sure it comes from high-quality sources. The bacon actually comes from Niman Ranch!

5. Clean-Crafted Wine from Scout & Cellar – This Sauvignon Blanc is light, crisp, and perfect for Spring! The amazing thing about Scout & Cellars Wine is that it is clean-crafted, which means it just includes grapes and less than 50ppm of sulfites.

Some mass-produced wines on the market have as much as 350ppm of sulfites. No wonder I feel like crap in the morning after only drinking a glass or two! Mass-produced wines can also have added sugar or sweetener concentrate, ferrocyanide, ammonium phosphate, copper sulfate, mega-purple, GMO ingredients, and synthetic pesticides. Yikes! This isn’t to say that I’ll never drink mass-produced wine again. I love to have wine out and have drinks with friends, but I will definitely do my best to control the wines that I drink at home!

We had THE BEST time in New York City! It was our first family trip to the Big Apple. It was also Quinn’s first train ride, which was a huge hit (despite his expression below)! 🙂

Saturday

On Saturday morning, we took the train from Westwood/Route 128 to Penn Station, so it was about 4 hours from station to station. We opted for the Northeast Regional instead of the Acela to save some money, but the trip actually flew by!

When we arrived at Penn Station, we hopped in a taxi to my friend’s apartment in the Village. We dropped off our bags and then headed out to City Vineyard for some lunch and drinks. It was a gorgeous day, so we took advantage of the weather and snagged a table outside, right on the water. It was quite lovely!

After that, we did some exploring, which included a visit to the Ghostbuster’s firehouse. Quinn was so psyched to see it. He loves the Ghostbuster movies!

Then, we stopped by Murray’s Cheese Bar to pick up some goodies for the evening. We got some seriously incredible cheeses – Romano, Gruyere, and Brie. Mmm! I actually don’t think I’ve eaten so much delicious cheese in one sitting!

Sunday

The next morning, we were up and at ’em with the sunrise, so our first order of business was iced coffee. We stopped into Partners Coffee for coffee and a delicious dount that we all shared. (How cute are Quinn’s little hands in the photo below?)

After that, we headed back to our friend’s apartment to get ready for the day. Once we were good to go, we walked to breakfast at Cafe Cluny, which was an absolutely adorable restaurant.

Wearing: Sweatshirt // Jeans // Sunglasses // Tote

The menu at Cafe Cluny was a little pricey, but the food, service, and atmosphere were all excellent! #worthit

After breakfast, we took at taxi to FAO Schwarz and did a little shopping. Quinn had such a fun time checking out all of the different toys and picking a “tiny prize” as a souvenir from New York City. We also stopped into the nearby LEGO store. It was cool, but there wasn’t all that much to it.

We were basically in and out of the LEGO store before taking a stroll up to Central Park.

We walked around the park and eventually found a really great playground where we stayed for quite awhile before getting hungry for lunch.

Before we got into a taxi to meet our friends, we stopped by The Doughnut Project. I heard they had the best doughnuts in the city, and the glazed doughnut was indeed amazing!

We met our friends at Upright Brew House for lunch and drinks. I drank a ton of wine, ate one million French fries, and then finished off the afternoon with some banana pudding from Magnolia Bakery. It was quite the epic afternoon! 🙂

We also did some shopping in the area and then stopped by the Sex and the City apartment, which was so cool to see. I was such a super fan when the series was on TV… and for many years afterward! 🙂

Sunday night was low-key. It included another amazing cheese plate and Game of Thrones at our friend’s apartment. I’m not currently a fan of the series, but Mal and our friends might have finally convinced me to watch it from the beginning. For the record, I fell asleep the first time I tried to watch the series and then fell asleep during the episode on Sunday night. Sooooo, we’ll see how things go. I know so many people love Game of Thrones, so I’m going to give it another chance.

Monday

On Monday, we grabbed a leisurely breakfast at Rosemary’s (another adorable restaurant) and then headed to Penn Station to take the train home. All in all, it was a wonderful trip to New York City. Quinn actually said he wants to visit again soon and stay for “10 days” next time!

Question of the Day

Are you a fan of Game of Thrones? If so, why do people like it so much?

I actually had a client recently ask me: “How do you overcome just not really wanting to cook?” Oh, yes, I’ve totally been there.

Not everyone loves cooking, but they still want to eat healthy meals. I personally love the idea of 3-ingredient “recipes” that you can throw together quickly and effortlessly. I don’t want to spend hours and hours in the kitchen. And I firmly believe that healthy eating doesn’t need to be super time-consuming or difficult.

Over the course of 3 weeks, you will receive eighteen 3-ingredient meal ideas. That’s six per week! Each one has simple ingredients that you can find at most grocery stores. Or, hey, you might already have them in your kitchen! The recipes are perfect for busy weeknights (be sure to pack up leftovers for lunch) and totally customizable to your taste and dietary preferences. Our family makes these meals again and again. I hope you find them as convenient, healthy, and delicious as we do!

Guess who played his first outdoor soccer game last Saturday!? Can you believe that our baby boy is playing soccer on a team? It’s crazy how quickly they grow up. And doesn’t he look so handsome in his uniform? Quinn is o team Brazil! 🙂

I actually had the opportunity to sponsor Quinn’s team, so Carrots ‘N’ Cake is written on the back of the team’s uniforms. How cool is that? And, of course, I’m more than happy to support youth soccer in our town.

Quinn had an absolute blast at soccer. His best friend from school is on his team, so he was psyched to play along side him. The two of them were so darn cute together as teammates, and I’m excited to see the season unfold as they all get more and more comfortable with their soccer skills.

So, it’s time for another edition of The Friday 5 where I cut to the chase and share my top 5 favorites from the week. (Five is also my lucky number!) Without further ado, here’s The Friday 5…

1. Apple Airpods – I jumped onboard the Apple Airpod train, and I’m in love. Just thinking about earbuds with cords makes me annoyed! Haha! These are seriously the best – they’re easy to pack and take anywhere, and they’re awesome for working out. I’ll also pop them in when I’m working at home to take calls and listen to podcasts while putting away the dishes or folding laundry. They make life so much simpler, and they STAY PUT in your ears – even for running workouts and burpees!!

2. Quest Birthday Cake Bars – If you’re a fan of Quest Bars, you must try this flavor. It’s incredible! I’ve been cutting them into quarters and eating a piece or two when I need a bite of something sweet – and it totally does the trick! I love that these bars are packed with protein and fiber, too.

3. Lucky Women’s Kyndra Sandals – I took them on my work trip to Phoenix, and I can tell that they’re going to be perfect for summer date nights – I love that you can dress them up or down. Amazon shopping makes me happy. I seriously find the best deals, and you can’t beat the 2-day Prime shipping! I also bought this pair for just $16.50 – such a steal!

4. Pamela’s Grain-Free Paleo Pancake Mix – This paleo-friendly pancake mix is our new favorite, and you might remember me mentioning it on the blog last week as well! Once again, I’m partnering with Pamela’s to share some of their delicious pancake mixes. We are seriously loving them lately! We actually used to make two batches of pancakes on the weekend — one that contained gluten for the boys, and one gluten-free for me. Discovering Pamela’s has been so great because the boys love it too, so we only have to make one mix! There’s actually 7 different pancake mix varieties – all of which are certified gluten-free and made from non-GMO ingredients. There are even dairy- and egg-free options as well.

You all know we love making pancakes on the weekends, and this paleo-friendly Grain-Free Pancake Mix by Pamela’s is so, so, so good. The pancakes have a delicious, nutty flavor from the almond, pecan, and walnut flours and the batter has a wonderful vanilla flavor that comes through subtly when cooked. Mmm! Each serving has 6g of protein (as prepared) and the instructions suggest almond milk, so they’re a great dairy-free option.

And, finally, I love that there’s no added sugar in Pamela’s mixes, especially if we’re already using maple syrup. If you haven’t tried Pamela’s Products (all gluten-free), I highly recommend them! You can purchase Pamela’s Products by visiting Amazon.com.

5. Reading before bed – My recent guilty pleasure is getting into bed and reading – right after Quinn goes to sleep. I used to stay up, half watching TV and half mindlessly scrolling through Instagram, but reading in bed has been so great for helping me wind down and sleep more soundly. I’m loving Michelle Obama’s Becoming and Brain Body Diet.

It’s almost Friday and Spring break (for Mal) is just around the corner! We’re excited to take a family trip to New York City this weekend to visit friends and our vacation can’t come soon enough!

(I stumbled upon this photo of Quinn from a few years ago, and his expression is just so adorable and makes me smile every time I see it. I just had to share it again!)

So, life lately… minus strep throat (Quinn ended up getting it too) has been going well. I feel like I am FINALLY getting into a groove with nutrition clients, Beautycounter, and the blog. For years (yes, years), I’ve felt so incredibly unsettled and stressed about everything. It was just too much to handle for one person, but now I have a team of nutrition coaches and a couple of people helping me with blog-related stuff. Obviously, things aren’t perfect and there’s always room for improvement, but I feel like things are coming together.

Related to stress: When I was in Phoenix, I met a consultant who told me about a book called “The Upside of Stress,” which is all about why stress can be good and how to make it work for you. I actually have 3 books on my nightstand right now, so I decided to opt for the author’s Ted Talk and related podcast episodes, and it’s really great. Her thoughts and research on stress is super interesting. Just wanted to share!

I’m trucking along with plant-based nutrition. I’m still eating meat, but only once a day or every other day. It’s definitely a challenge to meet my daily protein goal, but if there’s a will, there’s way! I’ve eaten a lot of “protein bowls” lately, so I have a blog post recapping them and sharing how I make them high in protein.

I’m also trucking along with weekly visits to our local fro-yo shop. The whole family is loving fro-yo lately!

Quinn is also loving his soccer shin guards and insists on wearing them even when he’s not playing. I mean, they do make him look really cool!

I’ve received a ton of requests from nutrition clients and readers for EASY, healthy meals, so I put together an email series sharing my favorite 3-ingredient meals. Ok, well, technically, some have 4-5 ingredients, but they’re super easy and most of them you probably already have in your kitchen. Long story short, be sure to sign up to get 18 delicious recipes delivered right to your inbox!

Mal’s dad is getting re-married in June (on Quinn’s birthday), so we’re preparing for the big day. Quinn got fitted for a tux a couple of weeks ago – and, my gosh, he looked handsome. Well, “fitted” actually means we bought a tux for him. Apparently, it’s more expensive to get a kid’s tux altered versus purchasing one. Now that Quinn owns his own tux, I think he should be “Boss Baby” for Halloween. Haha!

I’m still recruiting consultants for my team this month. I have two spots open. If you’re interested, drop me an email at tinabeautycounter@gmail.com. It’s such a great part-time gig! 🙂

Question of the Day
